#4 Becoming Cambodia

27/2/2019

How did the Khmer go from a civilisation which dominated most of mainland Southeast Asia, to a reduced vassal state of either the Siamese or the Vietnamese? Why is Phnom Penh the capital rather than Siem Reap? Why are the Vietnamese the ‘hereditary enemy’ of the Khmer? Time period covered: 1431 - 1800 The next part of the series is hugely important for establishing the context of Cambodia in the 20th century, and therefore the factors leading to the Khmer Rouge revolution. The transition of Angkor to Phnom Penh, as well as the relationship that develops between the Khmer and their neighbours in Siam and Vietnam are important aspects of Cambodian history in its ‘dark ages’ or ‘middle period’. In this episode, Lachlan introduces a brief history of Vietnam, as this eastern neighbour will play a vital role in the story of the region in the 20th century. I'm re-listening to the prior episodes to keep me content in the meantime because they are so jam-packed with information. Thank you so much for this lovely message Tenaya, it makes me so happy to know that the show is being enjoyed. I'll be releasing to a quicker schedule since I've finished my thesis and hopefully you won't have to wait quite so long for the next one.

Thanks for listening

I used to go to Cambodia a lot. I know that people need to go and visit there to know it. I think that people have no idea just how great of a country, especially if they are not people who travels a lot. I will come and make myself better. I hope that I can start to travel there, I might even want to go and write a blog for everyone who want to read about it, that's the plan.

Thanks for taking the time to make a comment Wesley, and thanks for listening!!

I actually began learning about Cambodia when I was 15, in my last few years of high school. It started with a few books, a movie and a couple of interested teachers. It snowballed into an interest I was able to keep addressing when I went through university - even culminating with Professor David Chandler becoming a mentor for my undergrad thesis.

Last year I was able to work at the Documentation Centre of Cambodia which was almost like a dream come true and a great way to finally ‘live’ in Cambodia a little more than the 6 months or so I had spent travelling there on a few occasions throughout my early 20s.
